¿Cuál es la diferencia entre "to be on the verge of" "to be about to" y "to be on the point of"?

Respuesta:

La verdad es que las tres expresiones son bastante semejantes. Todas pueden significar "estar a punto de".

Las diferencias tienen más que ver con las "collocations", es decir, que determinadas palabras se usan en determinadas expresiones o estructuras. Por ejemplo:

Es más frecuente decir:

• He is on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Está al borde un ataque de nervios.

que decir:

He is on the point of a nervous breakdown.


Veamos cada una de estas expresiones por separado.

To be on the verge of: Estar al borde de, en la antesala de.

Ejemplo:

• He is on the verge of collapse/disaster/bankrupcy. Está al borde del colapso/ desastre/quiebra.
• They are on the verge of a breakthrough. Ellos están en la antesala de un descubrimiento histórico.
• We are on the verge of a new era. Estamos en la antesala de una nueva era.

También "to be on the verge of" puede significar estar a punto de:

Ejemplos:

• He is on the verge of crying. Está a punto de llorar. Nota: Detrás de "of" el verbo va terminado en -ing.
• They are on the verge of falling. Están a punto de caer.

En general, se podría decir que  "on the verge of" tiene una connotación un poco más dramática que "to be about to" y "to be on the point of".

To be about to: Estar a punto de

Ejemplos:

• Sorry, I'm about to leave. Can you call me later?  Perdona, estoy a punto de salir. ¿Me puedes llamar más tarde?
• We were about to call him when he came in. Estabamos a punto de llamarlo cuando entró.
• Isn't he about to come? ¿No está él a punto de venir?

To be on the point of: Estar a punto de 

Ejemplos:

• He was at/on the point of death. Estuvo a punto de morir.
• They are on the point of calling the police. Están a punto de llamar a la policía.
• I'm on the point of starting a new job. E

Para resumir: "to be on the verge of", "to be about to" y "to be on the point of", significan practicamente lo mismo: "estar a punto de". Solo que "to be on the verge of" puede significar también "estar al borde de" y puede tener una connotación ligeramente más dramática.
