Topic: Uso de “can”, "could" y "be able to" 

Nota: Can se traduce como “poder” “puedo”,  “could” como podría,  o pude y “be able” como ser capaz. Esta última expresión no es un “modal verb” como “can” y “could”, sino el verbo “to be” más el adjetivo “able”. Se debe utiliza siempre en aquellos tiempos verbales en los que no se pueda utilizar “can” o “could” (ya que estos, al ser “modal verbs” no se conjugan). Por ejemplo, en el futuro. No puedo decir: Will can—Debo decir: “I will be able” – Yo podré, o seré capaz

Who will be able to come to our barbecue?

Rob and Lisa decided to organize a barbecue after their summer holidays and they were discussing who they could invite.

‘We can invite Rose and Steve’, suggested Lisa.

‘Yes, we can. We could also invite Gina and her sister Monica. And what about Esther?’ asked Rob

‘I don’t know if she will be able to come. I think she was going to be on holiday until the end of September’, said Lisa.

‘Lucky girl’, said Rob. ‘What about Jan and her husband?’

‘ I’ll put them on the list too’, said Lisa.

‘Do you think we will be able to organize everything before Saturday evening?’ asked Lisa

‘Without a doubt’, said Rob, ‘you can buy the meat at our local butcher’s and I can buy the rest of the things at the supermarket.’

‘But we also need to put some decoration in the garden and clean the barbecue’, said Lisa.

‘I can do that right now. What I can’t do is prepare the salads. You know you are a much better cook Lisa, so I think you can do that’, added Rob

‘No problem’, said Lisa. ‘What about  the desserts and the drinks?’ she asked.

‘We could ask Kathy and Ed for the drinks, and we could ask Jan to prepare her wonderful lemon pie,’ suggested Rob.

‘Will you be able to call all of them before Saturday?’ asked Lisa.

‘Yes, I will. But you could also call some people, couldn’t you?’ asked Rob.

‘No, remember I’m on holiday. I cannot talk on the phone from my work.’

‘Never mind, then. I’m sure I’ll be able to call everyone before Saturday. I’ll start by calling Esther right away’, said Rob and he took his mobile phone.

‘No, sorry Rob’, said Esther ‘I’m still on holiday in the country. What a pity! I won’t be able to go to your barbecue. I promise I’ll organize a barbecue when I’m back in the city and I’ll invite everybody.’

¿Quíén vendrá a la barbacoa?

Rob y Lisa decidieron organizar una barbacoa después de sus vacaciones de verano y  estaban decidiendo a  quienes podrían invitar.

 Podríamos invitar a Rose y Steve, sugirió Lisa.

 -Sí, podríamos. También podríamos  invitar a Gina y su hermana Mónica, dijo Rob.-Y ¿ a Esther?, preguntó Rob

 - No sé si puede venir. Creo que iba a estar de vacaciones hasta finales de septiembre, dijo Lisa.

- Una chica con suerte, dijo Rob

¿Y  Jan y su marido? preguntó Lisa

 - Voy a ponerlos en la lista también, dijo Rob

-¿Crees que serás capaz de organizar todo antes del sábado por la noche? preguntó Lisa

 - Sin duda, dijo Rob, tú puedes comprar la carne en la carnicería del barrio y yo puedo comprar el resto de las cosas en el supermercado, dijo Rob.

 - Pero también es necesario poner algunos adornos en el jardín y limpiar la barbacoa, dijo Lisa.

- Yo puedo hacer eso ahora mismo. Lo que no puedo hacer es preparar las ensaladas. Tú sabes que eres mucho mejor cocinera que yo  Lisa, así que creo que puedes hacer eso, añadió Rob

-Sí, sin problema, dijo Lisa 

-Y los postres y las bebidas? -preguntó ella

Podríamos pedírselas  a Kathy y Ed, y  Jan le podríamos pedir que prepare su maravillosa tarta  de limón, sugirió Rob.

- ¿Serás capaz de llamar a todo el mundo antes del sábado? preguntó Lisa.

- Sí, lo haré. Pero tú también podrías llamar a algunas personas, ¿no? preguntó Rob.

- No, recuerda que estoy de vacaciones. No puedo hablar por teléfono en mi trabajo.

- No importa. Estoy seguro de que podré  llamar a todos antes del sábado. Empezaré por llamar a Esther ahora mismo, dijo Rob, y cogió su teléfono móvil.

- No, lo siento Rob, dijo Esther. Todavía estoy de vacaciones en el campo. ¡Qué lástima! No voy a poder ir a tu barbacoa. Prometo que voy a organizar una barbacoa cuando regrese a la ciudad y voy a invitar a todo el mundo.               Imprimir
