The best gift

Sheryl and Darren were thinking of buying a present for their mother, but they didn’t exactly know what. Then Darren came up with an idea.

‘You know , Sheryl, I saw the nicest dress in the shopping centre last Saturday. I think it will be perfect for her.’

‘You’re wrong, Darren. She works from home and I don’t think she is interested in having the most beautiful dress in the world anymore. The best present for her is a new mobile phone; I saw the coolest smart phone in the shopping centre’, said Sheryl.

‘You are wrong, Sheryl. She is not much into technology, in fact, she hates it and she is happy with the simplest phone you can get in the market’, said Darren.

‘Well, what can we buy her then?’ asked Sheryl.

‘I think if it’s not going to be a dress, the most interesting thing for her is a book. She likes reading a lot, said Darren.

‘You are right’, said Sheryl.’ But what kind of book?’  she asked.

‘The most amazing story I’ve ever read, is about dinosaurs’, said Darren.

‘That’s the craziest idea I’ve ever heard. That’s what you like, not what she likes’, shouted Sheryl.

‘But do you agree that books are what she likes the most?’ asked Darren.

‘Yes, it’s true, but the stupidest idea is to think that she is going to like a story about dinosaurs that you like.
She likes books about cooking, art and photography’, said Sheryl

‘Oh, I’ve got the greatest idea! I know a book she’d like. It isn’t the cheapest book around, but I think we can afford it.  Do you remember that book we saw on the Internet about African Art?’

‘Yes, I do’, said Sheryl. ‘I think you could be right, she’d like that book because it’s one of the best books I’ve ever seen about African Art. Let’s buy it’, said Sheryl.

‘I think it’s going to be the most expensive book I’ve ever bought, but I’m sure it’s worth it,’ said Darren.
‘Yeah, you’re right. I think the easiest way to buy it is to use your credit card’, said Sheryl.

‘Oh, sister, you’re the cleverest woman in the whole world. Why don’t we use yours instead? ‘said Darren sarcastically.

Vamos a comprarlo, dijo Sheryl.

Which one is nicer?

William and Karen were thinking of buying a house. They had already seen several, and decided to lay the photos of each house on the table to compare them.

‘The one we saw on Wednesday is bigger than the one we saw on Thursday’, said William.

‘Yes, you are right. And this one, on the left, seems to be much more comfortable that the one on the right’, said Karen.

‘I think this one’, said William, pointing to a red house, ‘is much nicer than that one.’

‘Do you mean the one we saw yesterday?’ asked Karen.

‘Yes’, replied William.

‘Yes, it’s bigger and much more comfortable and beautiful’, said  Karen.

‘But I think the red house is more expensive than the grey house’, said William.

‘You are right. It’s about double the price of the grey house’, said Karen.

‘So, should we buy the nicer and bigger house?’ asked William.

‘No, it’s too expensive. I would rather get the small apartment we saw on Monday than the red house’, said Karen.

‘But that apartment is smaller than our current apartment’, objected William

‘Yes, but it’s a lot cheaper’, said Karen.

‘No, it’s isn’t cheaper. Remember it is on the outskirts so we would  have to commute every day’, said William.

‘You are right. Then we should settle for the grey house, it’s bigger  and cheaper than our apartment,’ suggested Karen.

‘Yeah, but it’s not as nice. I want to get something nicer and cozier’, said William.

‘Then we should keep looking’, said Karen.

‘I don’t want to look for houses anymore’, said William.

‘Oh, Bill, you are a lot lazier than I am’, said Karen.

‘Yes, you’re right, but I’m also smarter and cleaner’, said William.

‘Ha ha ha’ laughed Karen ‘even you don’t believe what you’ve just said.’ And they both laughed.

I used to work in a chocolate shop

‘I used to work in a chocolate shop when I was student’, said Carolyn.

‘Oh, that sounds really nice. Did you use to eat lots of chocolates?’ asked Claire

‘Not as many as I would have liked to.  Chocolate is very calorific and I used to be on a diet all of the time’, replied Carolyn

‘What a pity! I used to work in a bookshop when I was student, and there wasn’t much to eat there’, said Claire.

‘Did you use to get any discounts on books?’ asked Carolyn.

‘Yes. All the employees got a 5 percent discount on the books we sold in the shop. And you, did you use to get discounts on chocolates?’ asked Claire.

‘No, we didn’t. The owners were very stingy. I used to work part-time, 4 hours per day in the afternoons and we had to pay all the chocolate we took home’, replied Carolyn.

‘What a shame! I used to work 4 hours too, but in the morning.  And we used to get lots of presents for Christmas’, said Claire.

‘How lucky! We used to get a present every Christmas, but it was tiny, just two little chocolates in a box’, said Carolyn.

‘That’s very stingy indeed. And what about your salary?’ asked Claire.

‘Well, I used to get a normal wage as a shop assistant and no perks. And you? Did you use to earn a decent salary?’ asked Carolyn

‘Well, it was not too bad, it paid half of my bills. I also got support from my parents’, replied Claire. ‘And you? Did you use to get support from your parents?’ asked Claire.

‘Yes, I did. But those were hard days. I used to work and study many hours, and I used to eat at home everyday to save money on food’, said Carolyn.

‘Yeah, me too. I used to visit my mother a lot back then. She used to do my laundry and prepare nice warm meals’, added Claire.

‘Well, that’s something we can’t do nowadays. We must prepare our own meals. So, not everything used to be bad’, said Carolyn.

‘You are so right’, said her friend.

Yo visitaba mucho a mi madre entonces.

Don’t be late for dinner - Audio para beginners (Level 1)

Author: Mónica Tapia Stocker
Level: 1 - Beginners
Topic:  Past Perfect
He had already arrived home when she called. If I had known, I would have called you.

Por ejemplo: He had a car. El tenía un coche. He had dinner at home. El cenó en casa.

Don't be late for dinner

Alice had trouble getting her son off to sleep, so she started telling him a story about, Ken, a little rabbit that only wanted to play.

‘So, Chris, do you know what happened to Ken, the little rabbit?’  Alice asked her son.

‘No. What happened to Ken?’ asked Chris.

‘He had gone to play with his friends when his mother started calling him for dinner. She shouted:

“Ken, Ken, it’s dinner time! Where are you?” But Ken didn’t answer.

Ken was so happy having fun with his rabbit friends that he had forgotten all about his mother, and the dinner.

When all of his friends went home, he decided to visit his friend the beaver, who was helping his father to build a house in the river. He hadn’t seen the beaver for a long time, so he was very eager to pay him a visit.

As soon as he got to the river he saw the beaver was having dinner with his family, but he thought it was okay to interrupt.

“Hello, beaver, would you like to play with me?” Ken asked the beaver.

“No”, said the beaver “can’t you see I’m having dinner with my family?”

So, Ken, had to leave.  He was a bit disappointed because he really wanted to continue playing, but soon he forgot his disappointment when his friend Birdie appeared in front of his eyes. Birdie, was a nice little bird who had been Ken’s friend for many years.

“Hello, Birdie, would you like to play with me?”  Ken asked.

Birdie, who had been visiting his cousin in the south, was a little tired so he said:

“No, Ken, I really don’t feel like playing now. If you had asked me yesterday, it would have been different.”

“What have you been doing?” asked Ken.

“I paid a visit to my cousin, Jeff, because he has been a little ill lately.”

As none of his friends wanted to play with him, Ken sadly decided to go home.

When he got home he found that his family had already had dinner. He decided then to beg his mother for some food.

“If you hadn’t been so disobedient, we would have saved some food for you, but the rules are the rules”, said his mother. “If you are late, you don’t get any food.”

“Oh, come on, mom, I’m hungry”, he said.

“Hadn’t I told you to be here on time for dinner?” she asked

“Yes, you had”, admitted Ken.

“Then, before you do this again, think about the consequences”.

Then Alice realised that Chris had already fallen asleep.

No llegues tarde a cenar

- Hola, Birdie, ¿quieres jugar conmigo?, preguntó Ken.

- ¿Qué has estado haciendo? preguntó Ken.

“I have cut my finger”. Por ejemplo: He estado pintando mi habitación: I have been painting my room.

What have you been doing?

‘What have you been doing?’ asked Helen to her husband Alan when she saw him coming in the house with his face and hands dirty.

‘I have been cleaning the garage’, Alan replied.

‘Really? It looks as if you have been inside a coal mine’, Helen said.

‘Ha, ha, very funny!  I have been throwing away lots of junk. There were some cans of oil and I got dirty’, he replied a little bit irritated.

‘Have you found my jewellry box?  Do you remember I lost it when we moved here?’ asked Helen.

‘No, I haven’t seen it, but I have found a box full of cds from the eighties’, replied Alan.

‘That must be Lea’s box. Have you put some new boxes on the shelves?’ asked Helen.

‘Yes, I have put three new boxes there with the camping and Christmas stuff.’

‘Have you had any problems with the lighting?’ asked Helen.

‘Well, I have replaced one bulb that was gone’, answered Alan.

‘Have you cleaned everything else?’ asked Helen.

‘Yes, I have wiped the floor and dusted the shelves. I have washed my car too’, answered Alan.

‘Wow, that’s a lot of work. You must be tired now. Have you had a coffee yet?’ asked Helen.

‘No, not yet’, replied Alan.

‘I have just made some. Shall we have one?’ said Helen.

‘Yes, that’s a very good idea. I have also bought some biscuits, so we can have them with the coffee’, said Alan

‘Great!  Let’s celebrate then that we have a brand new garage thanks to your cleaning’, said Helen.

- He estado limpiando el garaje, respondió Alan.

- ¿Has encontrado mi joyero?

Ahora debes estar cansado. ¿Has tomado café ya?, preguntó Helen.

- No, todavía no, respondió Alan.

- ¡Genial! Vamos a celebrar que vamos a estrenar garaje gracias a tu limpieza, dijo Helen.

Where have you been?

‘Where have you been?’  asked Greg to his friend Charles when he saw he was all tanned.

‘I have been to the Maldives’, said Charles.

‘I Can’t believe it!  I was there too’, said Greg.

‘Really? When?’ asked Charles.

‘I went there a month ago’, answered Greg.

‘ Well, that’s why we didn’t meet there. I have just come back from there’, said Charles.

‘I can see. You are very brown. Have you seen Marcia this week at the office?’ asked Greg

‘Yes, I have. What about her?’ asked Charles.

‘She has been to the Maldives too’, said Greg.

‘Really?  I don’t know, I never talk to her because she works in a different department. It looks like we have all been to the Maldives lately’, said Charles.

‘There are lots of offers on the Internet to go there. That must be the reason why everybody is going’, said Greg.

‘I also went to India since it’s very close to the Maldives, added Charles.

‘Really? That must have been a really nice trip. Did you buy anything there?’

‘Well, some presents for my family and a cold’, replied Charles.

‘A cold?’ asked Greg

‘Yes, I caught a cold on the plane and it hasn’t gone away yet.’
‘What a pity!’ said Greg.

‘Have you had lunch yet?’ asked Charles.

‘No, I haven’t’, replied Greg

‘Let’s go and have lunch together and I’ll tell you all about my trips’, said Charles.

No puedo decir: Will can—Debo decir: “I will be able” – Yo podré, o seré capaz

Who will be able to come to our barbecue?

Rob and Lisa decided to organize a barbecue after their summer holidays and they were discussing who they could invite.

‘We can invite Rose and Steve’, suggested Lisa.

‘Yes, we can. We could also invite Gina and her sister Monica. And what about Esther?’ asked Rob

‘I don’t know if she will be able to come. I think she was going to be on holiday until the end of September’, said Lisa.

‘Lucky girl’, said Rob. ‘What about Jan and her husband?’

‘ I’ll put them on the list too’, said Lisa.

‘Do you think we will be able to organize everything before Saturday evening?’ asked Lisa

‘Without a doubt’, said Rob, ‘you can buy the meat at our local butcher’s and I can buy the rest of the things at the supermarket.’

‘But we also need to put some decoration in the garden and clean the barbecue’, said Lisa.

‘I can do that right now. What I can’t do is prepare the salads. You know you are a much better cook Lisa, so I think you can do that’, added Rob

‘No problem’, said Lisa. ‘What about  the desserts and the drinks?’ she asked.

‘We could ask Kathy and Ed for the drinks, and we could ask Jan to prepare her wonderful lemon pie,’ suggested Rob.

‘Will you be able to call all of them before Saturday?’ asked Lisa.

‘Yes, I will. But you could also call some people, couldn’t you?’ asked Rob.

‘No, remember I’m on holiday. I cannot talk on the phone from my work.’

‘Never mind, then. I’m sure I’ll be able to call everyone before Saturday. I’ll start by calling Esther right away’, said Rob and he took his mobile phone.

‘No, sorry Rob’, said Esther ‘I’m still on holiday in the country. What a pity! I won’t be able to go to your barbecue. I promise I’ll organize a barbecue when I’m back in the city and I’ll invite everybody.’

- No importa.

No voy a poder ir a tu barbacoa.

COULD YOU CALL 999?

The receptionist at the hotel heard a voice from the other end of the phone that said,
‘This is room 247, we have an emergency here, could you call 999?’

‘Yes, sir.  I’ll do it right away.’

Then the receptionist decided to go upstairs and see what had happened.

He knocked on the door, and a middle aged man wearing a white bathrobe opened the door. He looked pale and was sweating.

‘It’s my wife, she fainted’, he said showing the body of his wife lying on the floor.

The receptionist looked at the woman lying on the floor. She seemed to be breathing.

‘I have some training in first aid, in fact I used to be a nurse’, said the receptionist taking the woman’s pulse.
‘Could it be a stroke?’ asked the worried husband.

‘It could be anything.  What were you doing before she fainted?’

‘We were drinking champagne’, he said and then he exclaimed ‘I know what it could be. This could be a side effect to her medication.’

While the receptionist was trying to revive the woman by elevating her legs and putting a pillow under them, he asked her husband.

‘What kind of medicine is she taking?’

The man then went to get her medicine which was on the night table.

‘This medicine’ he said showing the package to the receptionist.

‘Yes, this could be the reason, but she could also have fainted for other causes.’

At this moment, the woman woke up and asked if she could have some water.

‘Better juice’, said the receptionist. Her husband went to the small fridge that was next to the wardrobe and got an orange juice.

‘Could you tell me what happened?’ asked the woman as she was drinking the juice.

‘You fainted’ said her husband. ‘I couldn’t wake you up so I asked the receptionist to call 999, an ambulance must be coming now’, he added.

‘Yes’, said the receptionist and former nurse, ‘I think you’d better be seen to by a doctor.’

‘Could it be a side effect to the medication I’m taking it?’ She asked.

‘Yes, it could. But it could be something else too, that’s why you better get a check up’.

At that moment someone was knocking at the door. It was the paramedics.

We must get a SAT NAV - Audio para beginners (Level 1)

Topic: "Must" y "Have to"

WE MUST GET A SAT NAV

Patricia, Eve and Margaret decided to go on a short trip to Lanzarote, an Island to the south of Spain.

When they got to the airport, they rented a car and they drove to the hotel. Eve was driving and Patricia and Margaret were looking at their maps, trying to guide Eve.

‘Eve, you have to turn right at the next corner’, said Patricia.

‘No, Eve, you have turn left not right’, insisted Margaret.

‘What? What do I have to do?’ asked Eve nervously while driving.

‘Eve’, insisted Patricia  ‘you have to turn right.’

Eve, turned right but then she decided to stop at a petrol station.

‘You know what: I must know where I’m driving to so I’m going to ask the way to our hotel in this petrol station.’

Eve asked a tall, dark-haired man who was working as a cashier at the petrol station.

‘Yes, to get to the hotel “Las Palomas” you have to follow this road’ he pointed at a map ‘then at the roundabout turn right and then at the next junction turn left. The hotel is there. Remember’, he insisted, ‘you have to turn right at the roundabout.’

‘Okay, thank you very much’, said Eve and then she got in the car again with her friends.

‘You know what’, said Margaret, ‘we must get a sat nav.’

‘You are right’ said Patricia, ‘we must get a sat nav.

‘But, then we would have to go back to the airport to get the sat nav at the rent a car agency’, said Eve.

‘Yes, we would have to’, said Margaret, ‘but it’s a pretty good idea even if we have to pay more money.’

The three friends got safely to their hotel, unpacked their suitcases, and went back to the airport to get a sat nav.

When they got back to the hotel, they decided to go for a swim.
Eve said to Patricia

‘You must put a lot of suntan cream on, otherwise you’ll get burnt.’

‘Thank you “mom” for reminding me’, said Patricia, and they all laughed.
