En español decimos:
- Te recomiendo que vayas a ese restaurante.

En inglés decimos:
- I recommend that you go to this restaurant.
----
En inglés el uso verbo "recommend" en presente como sugerencia o consejo tiene truco. Presta atención.
No puedes decir:
- I recommend you
- Te recomiendo que vayas a ese restaurante.
Tienes que decir:
- I recommend you (that-opcional) go to that restaurant.
Nota: Siempre que "recommend" se utilice como para dar una "sugerencia" o "consejo" (en español en este caso se utiliza el modo subjuntivo) no ponemos "to" cuando hay otro verbo detrás.
¿Por qué esta omisión del "to" presenta problemas? Porque no se suele omitir "to" con otros verbos que en español van en subjuntivo también.
Por ejemplo decimos:
- He would like you to do it. A él le gustaría que lo hicieses.
- I want you to stay. Quiero que te quedes.
Pero,
- I recommend (that) you work there . Te aconsejo que trabajes allí.
Gerundio: También es posible utilizar un gerundio detrás de "recommend" así:
- She recommends reading those books. Ella recomienda/aconseja leer esos libros.
- I recommend listening to English every day. Recomiendo/aconsejo escuchar inglés todos los días.
Nota: Fíjate como en español el verbo que sigue a "recomendar/aconsejar" va en infinitivo.
Si "recommend" no es una sugerencia o consejo (estrictamente el subjuntivo en español) sino "un elogio", entonces la estructura sí lleva "to" detrás del objeto/persona que "recomendamos".
Ejemplos:
- He recommended this restaurant (objeto que recomiendo) to us. El nos recomendó este restaurante.
-Would you recommend her to my boss? ¿La recomendarías a mi jefe?

Me ha encantado tu post sobre "recommend".
Yo siempre lo he utilizado de forma correcta cuando es " recommend that..." Pero una amiga canadiense me dijo que se podía decir de las dos formas.
Ésto es lo que me contó:
"I want you to buy a coat" and " I recommend you take a tour.." This should not be confusing if you accept the fact that certain verbs in Spanish require the subjunctive, but in English some do not, the others can go both with the indicative or subjunctive (more often in BE than in AmE, while some others require subjunctives. The verb "want" goes always with the indicative (want to). The subjunctive is not popular in English and there is a growing tendency to use the indicative instead. Examples:
(BE): I prefer her to drive; (AmE): I prefer that she drive. [not *that she drives(indicative); drive = subjunctive].
(BE): I recommended you to be the candidate; (AmE) I recommended that you be the candidate.
In BE, "should" is often used for subjunctives, whlle in AmE "should" is normally omitted.
(BE): I insisted that he should be responsible for the accident; (AmE): I insisted that he be responsible for the accident.
(BE): I demand that she should leave the meeting (subjunctive) but also: I demand that she leaves the meeting (indicative!); (AmE): I demand that she leave the meeting)
I hope that this is not as complicated as it seems, but there is nothing simple about the use subjunctives in English. Regards.
Por tanto, aquí va mi pregunta. ¿Realmentes está mal decir, como en el ejemplo de arriba: "I recommended you to be the candidate" ?

Verás que, además de "recommend", hay una serie de verbos que se comportan de manera similar. En dicho post, encontrarás ejemplos no sólo de utilización del subjuntivo, sino también de otras estructuras equivalentes y gramaticalmente correctas.
