Unit 41 Level 3 (Upper Intermediate - Advanced) Quantifiers

As determiners, quantifiers precede and modify nouns. They indicate the quantity of something, though, unlike numerals, they denote an imprecise quantity.

1) First of all, let’s watch a couple of videos about quantifiers.

Video 1

Video 2

2) Time to read some theory in English here and here. Pay attention to how quantifiers operate with nouns depending on the latter being countable or uncountable.

3) Now, let’s have some practice with this set of exercises:

Exercise 1

Exercise 2

Exercise 3

Exercise 4

4) Translate the following sentences into English:

a) El hombre no sabía a quién pertenecía el teléfono, ni tampoco cómo manejarlo.

b) Como ahora mismo no estoy trabajando, tengo tiempo de sobra para trabajar en este nuevo proyecto.

c) Únicamente algunas de las disposiciones se refieren específicamente a la protección de datos.

d) Desgraciadamente, había muy poco dinero cuando la Comisión elaboró su propuesta.

e) En algunos de los países con las tasas de empleo femenino más bajas, se están proponiendo pocas medidas.

5) Practising the sentences you have learnt today with a language exchange partner would be a very effective way to improve your speaking skills. Do you already have one? You don’t? Check this out.

6) Let's learn some vocabulary. Extract all the words you don't know from this text. Look them up in an English-English dictionary like this one. Remember: Always listen to the sound of the new word first. Never learn new words just by reading! You can use Howjsay to learn how the words sound.

7) Listen and read this story. You should learn all the vocabulary and practice pronunciation. And, for the most daring, read this article from The Economist.

8) Finally, write a story of about 200/250 words using the determiners we have reviewed in this unit. You can use examples from the videos and exercises above.

If you have done all the exercises, then you've scored a 10! Congratulations!

**********

c) Only a few provisions specifically deal with data protection.

d) Unfortunately, there was too little money when the Commission drafted its proposal.

Llevo mucho tiempo en tu blog y cada vez me sorprende más. Sobre todo vuestra capacidad de organización y trabajo. ¡Enhorabuena!. Trabajo en una Oficina de Empleo y cada vez recomiendo más vuestra página a tantos desempleados como hay en estos momentos.

Gracias por todo. Dios os lo pague.
