Unit 49 Level 3 (Upper Intermediate - Advanced) Each & Every

In this week’s lesson we are going to brush up on the use of two determiners which are often confusing for Spanish speakers: “each” and “every”.

1) Let’s start by reading some theory in English here and here.

2) Sure you will find this exercise quite easy. Anyway, let’s give a try. Then, translate the following sentences into English:

3) Time to put your listening skills to the test with this activity from ESL-Lab.com.

4) Reading Comprehension: answer the questions based on the following text.

5) Use the sentences from the above exercises as topics to practice with your language exchange. Remember: If you don't have a language exchange (or a teacher) you're wasting your time, you'll never learn to speak English.

6) Let's learn some vocabulary. Extract all the words you don't know from this text. Look them up in an English-English dictionary like this one.

7) Listen and read this story. You should learn all the vocabulary and practice pronunciation. And, for the most daring, read this article from The Independent.

8) Finally, do the following writing task. If you have done all the exercises, then you've scored a 10! Congratulations!

**********

Key to exercise 2:

a) Such behaviour takes a toll on human beings of every age and income, culture and religion.

b) Social responsibility applies to each and every task that we perform every day.

c) Our team of localization experts will be happy to help you every step of the way.

d) In the event of a delay in delivery our company is entitled to claim for each day of delay a compensation of 2%

e) The aim is to send information or links every other week.

f) Why should we do this together, rather than each of us separately?

g) Our dependency on oil is proving too costly in every respect.

Buenas noches.
Lo primero de todo enhorabuena por el blog, está genial, jamás pensé que iba a aprender tanto en tan poco tiempo, sin duda es una herramienta fantástica.
He estado leyendo uno de los links y para mi desesperación ha habido un fragmento de la explicación que no me he enterado de nada. Si fueran ustedes tan amables de explicármelo de otra manera a ver si mi limitado intelecto consigue enterarse de algo, pues yo se lo agradecería infinitamente. El fragmento en cuestión es este:
each NOT every

Remember only each can be used as a pronoun, irrespective of whether we are describing two or more of something or three or more of something. Study the following:
•No, no. It's not £30 for both of them. They each cost £30. (OR: They cost £30 each.)
•The inheritance was shared out equally among the six children. Each (of them) received £32,000.
•I gave them each (OR each of them) a $10 tip when I checked out of the hotel.

If we want to use every in a similar way, indicating three or more of something, we must insert one before of them as every has no pronominal form itself. A lot of word stress is put on one so that in effect it means every single one of them. We can use each one of them in a similar way. Study the following and the earlier examples of this structure:
•The inheritance was shared out equally among the six children. Every one of them received £32,000.
•I gave every one of them a $10 tip when I checked out of the hotel.
Muchísimas gracias de verdad por la gran labor didáctica que realizan ustedes aquí y por su paciencia.
