Mandy is talking to her husband, Mike about a house they want to buy.

‘How much would it cost us?’ Mandy asks

‘It’s about five hundred thousand pounds.’ replies Mike

‘I don’t think we can afford it. Our house is only worth two hundred thousand pounds.’

‘No, Mandy. It is worth two hundred and fifty thousand pounds.’

‘Okay. But we would still have to borrow another two hundred and fifty thousand pounds.’

‘No. We have saved a hundred thousand. So we have to borrow only a hundred and fifty thousand’, says Mike

‘But we must add the taxes and the Land Registry Fee.’

‘Five hundred thousand pounds includes all that extra cost.’

‘I’m still not sure if we can afford it. Why don’t we buy something more affordable, like in the range of three hundred and fifty thousand?’, says Mandy

‘But there aren’t any houses that I like at that price.’

‘That’s not true. We just have to wait a little bit and we’ll find something.’

‘I’m not so sure’, replies Mike.

‘Remember my friend, Theresa, the one that lives near the children’s school?’

‘Yeah, what about her?’ Asks Mike

‘Well, she and her husband bought the house where they are living for four hundred thousand.’

‘I can’t believe it. That’s a bargain’

‘You, see. I think we just have to wait.’
