Unit 31 Level 3 (Upper Intermediate - Advanced) To - For - So That

This time, our weekly lesson will be devoted to the study of the so-called “clauses of purpose”, which are used to show the motivation for some action.

1) First of all, let’s have a look at these videos:

Meanings of the preposition, particle and adverb "to".

Meanings of the preposition “for”.

2) Both “in order to” and “so as to” convey exactly the same meaning than “to” when expressing purpose. Read some theory about the use of these expressions in Spanish and English

3) Let’s practice!

5) Now it's your duty to practice with your language exchange. Use sentences like those you have just learned. Remember: Make sentences and repeat them aloud.

6) Let's learn some vocabulary here. Remember: Listen and repeat. Look the words up in a dictionary when necessary. Once you have finished, don’t forget to do this quiz.

7) Listen and read this story. You should learn all the vocabulary and practice pronunciation. And, for the most daring, read this article from The Economist.

8) Finally, write a story of about 200/250 words using sentences like those we have reviewed in this unit. You can use examples from the videos and exercises above.

If you have done all these exercises, then you've scored a 10! Well done!

Diferencias entre "so that" y "in order to"

¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre "so that" e "in order to"?

"So that" se usa en inglés informal (hablado) e "in order to" en inglés formal (aparece más frecuentemente escrito y no se suele emplear tanto al hablar).

Significado: ambas expresiones significan "para", "a fin de que", "de modo que". La traducción exacta depende de lo que quede mejor en español.

Uso:

Generalmente, estas expresiones ("so that" y "en order to") van seguidas de un "modal verb".(*)

Por ejemplo:

-I'm going to stay in London for a year so that I can improve my English. Voy a quedarme en Londres un año para poder mejorar mi inglés. Nota: "Can" es un "modal verb". Aquí traducimos "so that" como "para".

-We will give you a brochure in order that you may have all the information. Les daremos un folleto para que puedan tener toda la información. Nota: "May" es un "modal verb").

(*) Los verbos modales (modal verbs) son verbos auxiliares, es decir, verbos que necesitan de otro verbo para poder tener sentido en una oración. Además, tienen algunas otras características en común. Son invariables, por ejemplo; no añaden "s" en la tercera persona; o no se pueden utilizar en pasado o futuro. Por ejemplo; no podemos decir "you musted" (tú debiste)

Los 10 verbos modales más usados en inglés son: Should, Ought, Would, Will, May, Might, Can, Could, Must y Need.
