Unit 5 Level 3 (Upper intermediate- Advanced) First and Second Conditionals

First a note about the way grammarians call the conditionals.

Some authors distinguish four types of conditionals and other three types of conditionals.

When they talk about four types of condionals they either include in their classification 0 (zero) conditional as a separate group of conditionals or in the second conditional they distinguish two types of conditionals: imaginary and hypothetical.

But in this course we will study the conditionals in this order:

1) IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT TENSE + SUBJECT + WILL + VERB (INFINITIVE) (Imperative also included). Unit 5, level 3 of this course.

2) IF + SUBJECT + PAST TENSE + SUBJECT + WOULD + VERB (INFINITIVE) Unit 5 level 3 of this course.

3) IF + SUBJECT + PAST PERFECT + SUBJECT + WOULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE OF THE MAIN VERB. Unit 6 level 3 of this course.

4) IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT TENSE + SUBJECT´+ PRESENT TENSE. Unit 6 level 3 of this course.

***************

Do you know what the problem is with conditionals when you're learning them?

That you mix them all up!

It is also very common not to know what tense to use in each part of the sentence. So, in order to solve this problem, in this lesson we will talk about the first and second conditionals, and we will practice so much that you are never going to forget how to make these conditional sentences again.

1) First watch this video

2) Now read some theory in Spanish about conditionals to clarify concepts.

First Conditional (theory in Spanish)

Second Conditional (theory in Spanish)

3) Listen and repeat. You can use the following examples to practice with your language exchange. You don't have a language exchange? Go get one right away!

First conditional, examples

Second conditional, examples.

4) First and Second conditional with Jennifer. Theory and exercises
Conditionals (1st and 2nd)

Part 1- Introduction to conditionals- Real or Factual Conditionals. (1st Conditional)
Part 2 Reemplazar "If" por "when" o "whenever" y Future Conditionals. (1st Conditional)
Part 3 Real situations y Cuando usar "Unless". (1st Conditional)
Part 4 Unreal situations in the Present (2nd Conditional)

5) We will continue practicing with different resources.

Remember: Always listen and repeat, don't just read!

"What would you do if you won ten million dollars or pounds?" Please, pay attention to the different accents and repeat the questions and answers aloud.

A song about the second conditional

The same song, but with a quiz.

7) Now let's learn some vocabulary. Remember: Listen and repeat. Look the words up in a dictionary when necessary.

Expressions related to colors.
Expressions related to "Thanksgiving Day".
Expressions related to "St. Patrick's Day".
"Independence Day" (Part 1)
"Independance Day" (Part 2)
Expressions with the word "table".

More vocabulary (includes idioms and expressions) Very good!

Remember: Always listen to the sound of the new word first. Never learn new words just by reading! You can use Howjsay to learn how the words sound.

8) Listen and read this story. You should learn all the vocabulary and practice pronunciation. And, for the most daring, read this article from The Economist.

9) Finally, learn to write a summary with all these exercises. (British English)
